In general, you will need:
- A tourist visa
- Mexican auto insurance
All of these are simple and inexpensive to obtain, and can be acquired when you arrive at the border. (Although you may want to save money by arranging for insurance ahead of time.)
From Tucson (320 Miles) – about a 6-hour drive:
- Take AZ Highway 19 to Nogales
- Take Exit #4 to the Highway 189 bypass (Mariposa Road), which then becomes Mexico Highway 15
- You’ll encounter 3 toll booths
on Highway 15 on the way to San Carlos, charging between
19 and 59 pesos each.
- About 257 km (160 miles) south of the border, you’ll arrive at Hermosillo. At the first stoplight, turn left to head toward Guaymas.
San Carlos is 10 km north of Guaymas. As you approach Guaymans, follow the well-marked road signs to San Carlos.
